SliceStep is a local-first desktop application. This policy explains, plainly, what happens to your data — both inside the SliceStep app and on this website.
SliceStep does not have a server for your content to be sent to. Screen recordings, voice narration, click data, and everything built from them are processed on your own device and stay there unless you choose to export or share them yourself.
Screen recordings. Captured and processed entirely on your device using a locally bundled copy of ffmpeg. Recordings are never transmitted anywhere by SliceStep.
Voice narration. If you record narration, it is transcribed on-device using a local Whisper speech-recognition model. Audio is never sent off your device for transcription.
Click and interaction data. SliceStep reads mouse click positions and, on Windows, queries the operating system's own accessibility information (control names and types) to build step-by-step instructions. This data is used only to construct your walkthrough and is never transmitted anywhere.
Optional AI features. SliceStep includes optional, off-by-default AI features (built on a model called Florence-2) for suggesting instruction text on steps where accessibility information isn't available. These run entirely on your device once downloaded. Enabling an AI feature for the first time downloads the required model files from Hugging Face's servers — this is a one-time download of software, not a transmission of your content. Your screen recordings, audio, and other content are never sent as part of this or any other download.
Redaction scanning. The optional redaction feature scans a step's screenshot on-device for patterns that look like emails, phone numbers, or account numbers, so you can black them out before exporting. This scan never leaves your device.
Projects and settings. Saved projects, exported files, and app settings are stored in a folder on your own computer. SliceStep does not operate any backend that stores or has access to this data.
Analytics and telemetry. SliceStep does not currently collect usage analytics, crash reports, or telemetry of any kind. If this changes in a future version, this policy will be updated first, and any such collection will be opt-in.
Network access. Beyond the one-time AI model download described above, SliceStep may also connect to the internet to download a required video-processing component (ffmpeg) if it isn't already present, and to check for app updates if that feature is available in your version. None of these connections transmit your content.
This site is a set of static pages with no account system, no tracking scripts, and no cookies set by us. It is hosted by Cloudflare, which — like any web host — processes standard technical logs (such as IP address and browser type) as part of serving the pages and protecting against abuse. We don't have access to personally identify you from this.
If you email us (for example, to join the launch notification list), we'll use that email address only to contact you about SliceStep, and never share it with third parties for marketing purposes.
SliceStep is a tool for creating walkthroughs you then choose to export and share — as an HTML file, a video, a PDF, and so on. Once you export and share a file, what happens to it is up to you and whoever you send it to; that sharing is entirely outside SliceStep's control, because it happens after the file has left the app.
SliceStep is a professional productivity tool and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
If this policy changes in a material way, we'll update the date at the top of this page and, where practical, note the change in the app itself.
